Well, Jens: Jon, Elizabeth, and I started the Independent because we do feel that lots of important issues in Jersey City are woefully under-covered by the media that’s currently out there. But it’s probably not fair to attribute the Journal’s drop in subscribers entirely to the quality of the paper. Reasons for the circulation drop include external factors like the changing demographics of Hudson County, and, more recently, the migration of many print readers to the web. People who want to read a local paper in print every day continue to subscribe to or buy the Journal, which has been the only game in town for a long time.

Yes, the whole news industry is, all papers are in trouble. But with these numbers: “In 2005, when the paper transitioned from a broadsheet format to the current tabloid look, the New York Times reported that daily circulation was at 26,600, down from a peak of around 150,000 in the mid-1970s.”, maybe it is simply a lousy newspaper! If not, why do John and the other have started the Independent?

I love Ian’s blog, but I can’t understand why anyone interested in Jersey City real estate would skip the print edition of the Journal. How can someone into real estate here survive without reading the foreclosure notices?
