Manzo Announces Two More Council Candidates

By • Mar 6th, 2009 • Category: Blog, Politics

Mayoral candidate Lou Manzo announced two more candidates on his council slate yesterday. Board of Education supervisor and Housing Authority commissioner Arthur Williams will run for the Ward B seat, and minister and Urban Coordinating Council director Ron-Calvin Clark will run in Ward F. (The Journal also reports that Rolando Lavarro will run in Ward A, a fact that was officially announced on Feb. 11.)

In a meeting with the Journal, Manzo pointed out that his ticket boasts three African-Americans and a Filipino-American, thereby reflecting Jersey City’s ethnic diversity. In addition, he said that the inclusion of law-enforcement veterans and grassroots community leaders creates a dialogue between the two groups, who are often on opposite sides of the table when it comes to questions of how to deal with crime.

This announcement leaves only the Ward E seat to be filled for Manzo to complete his ticket. There has been some acrimony between Manzo and Steven Fulop, the ward’s incumbent councilman, whom Manzo reportedly accused of conspiring with Mayor Healy to damage Manzo’s character in the race.
