Chromium Study Recruiting Families with Young Children

By Jon Whiten • Mar 20th, 2009 • Category: Blog, News

There is currently a two-phase Chromium Exposure and Health Study being done by Rutgers University’s Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute (EOHSI). The goal of the first phase was to determine if hexavalent chromium was present in homes in Jersey City, and the second phase is a biomonitoring study of children’s urine to determine if residential exposures to hexavalent chromium were significant.

This second phase is now recruiting Jersey City families with children ages 6 and younger to participate. Participation is by appointment and takes about an hour. During this appointment, investigators from EOHSI come to the home, explain the project, collect dust samples from three areas of the house or apartment and ask the parent or guardian to help the child give a urine sample. Once all the dust and urine samples are collected, the family is given $25.

If you have any questions or would like to participate in the study, call Dr. Kathy Black at 1-866-855-2712. The individual results of the sampling are confidential.
