Jersey City Community Health Centers Get Stimulus Boost

Two Jersey City community health centers serving low-income populations have been awarded nearly a half-million dollars in federal stimulus money over the next two years to expand service.

Horizon Health Center will receive $236,235 in stimulus money, while the Metropolitan Family Health Network will get $218,212. Horizon, which is based on Bergen Avenue, also runs two satellite locations in the city and operates a mobile health care truck. Metropolitan, based on Garfield Avenue, runs a satellite location in West New York and a homeless health care program in Jersey City.

“[I'm] gratified by the level of federal investment,” Katherine Grant-Davis, president and CEO of the New Jersey Primary Care Association, the trade association that oversees the work of the health centers in NJ, says. “As the economy continues to decline, the federal government is projecting significant increases in the number of uninsured and so we have to do everything we can to build access to primary and preventive health care.”

The centers are among 1,128 nationwide that are receiving $338 million in funding to help an additional 2.1 million patients across the country. The funding is being provided by the Health Resources Services Administration, a branch of the Department of Health and Human Services, as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
