- The New Jersey Uniform Crime Report for the first six months of 2008 shows a 5 percent decrease in violent crimes but a 3 percent rise in overall crime in Hudson County over the first six months of 2007.

- Mayoral candidate Lou Manzo is profiled in today’s Journal. He says he’s running for mayor for the fifth time because he believes he has the solutions. “Seeing a city with so many problems is like a player who is on the bench,” Manzo says. “He’s just dying for the coach to put him in so he can win the game.”

- The Insider notes that former mayor Anthony Cucci not only endorsed independent Ward A candidate Andre Richardson yesterday, but also gave his backing to Manzo in the mayoral race.

- A Port Authority cop has been arrested on charges he used his position to improperly obtain state criminal data about a friend.

- The Garden Preschool Cooperative, a parent-run nonprofit preschool, will hold a Silent Auction fundraiser during Saturday’s Van Vorst Park Flea Market (9 am – 4 pm). Auction items will include drawings by local artist Beth Gilfen, a personal training session at Maximum Motion Fitness, Adult Cooking Classes with the owner of Made With Love cafe and more.

- Hoboken resident Lorin Unger has launched the Hoboken Taxi Complaints blog in an effort to to help taxi riders understand their rights. (If you’re wondering what Hoboken has to do with the Jersey City Independent, try living in the Heights and missing the last light rail train. Then you’ll know why Hoboken’s taxi problems affect us.)

- Jersey City hospitals are celebrating National Nurses Week, which runs between today (National Nurses Day) and next Tuesday.

- We’re hoping the rain doesn’t cancel the first Groove on Grove concert of the series, featuring Any Day Parade and Higgins. If the weather holds, be sure to hit the Grove Street PATH station plaza at 6 pm.

- As part of National Preservation Month, the director of the library’s New Jersey Room will lead a seminar tonight on how to research a home’s history, from 6:30-8 pm (472 Jersey Ave.). It’s free, but registration is required — call 201-547-6961 or email charris (at) jclibrary.org.

- Nonpartisan legislative budget analysts warn that the state’s revenue shortfall “may exceed, perhaps significantly” the $2 billion gap Gov. Corzine talked about last week.
