For full listings, check out our Cultural Calendar in the right rail of the site.

TODAY

- Tonight at IM Automata Chino (99 Greene St.): A solid and eclectic lineup tonight, with New Brunswick solo performer PJ Bond, the young-but-impressive Long Island band Robbers, Philly’s Tom Waits-influenced lo-fi dude Ladyfingers and Celebrator.

- For a different musical experience, the Con Vivo Spring Quartet Festival continues tonight at Grace Church Van Vorst (39 Erie St.). The Toomai Quartet will play the music of Cuban composer Ernesto LeCuona as well as classics.

- As we’ve mentioned, tonight and tomorrow are the final two chances to see Art House Productions’ Heavy Craft/Soft Landing (at 1 McWilliams Place). Check out our review of a performance from last weekend.

SATURDAY

- The Van Vorst Flea Market, which raises money for improvements to Van Vorst Park and always makes for good browsing, is today from 9 am-4 pm today at — you guessed it — Van Vorst Park.

- The Jersey City Museum wraps up it’s “I’ve Got Talent, Now What?” career-development series with an informal reception from 2-4 pm where artists can network with other artists and curators. (Read our piece on the series’ first installment here.) The event (at 350 Montgomery St.) is free, but reservations are recommended. Visit the museum’s site for details.

- There’s an art opening at lenapeeps (704 Grand St. #2) tonight from 6-9 pm. According to the gallery, it’s the first-ever American viewing of box light works by Mexico City artists Delphine Passot and Arnaud Zein El Din.

- Jersey City suffers from an embarrassment of riches when it comes to live music tonight. Local faves Any Day Parade play at the Lamp Post (382 2nd St.) with Poverty Hash, while honorary locals (they’re actually from Metuchen) the Roadside Graves play at IM Automata Chino (99 Greene St.), along with The Poconos, The Press and Joe Romeo & The Orange County Volunteers. For the non-rockers, there’s live jazz from 7:30-9:30 pm at Made With Love cafe (530 Jersey Ave.).

SUNDAY

- Today is Mother’s Day, and the cultural calendar is a little sparse. We do know that LITM (140 Newark Ave.) will be having a live jazz brunch, though, from 11 am-2 pm, featuring Jane Stuart.

THIS SUNDAY: Curious Matter’s POISON exhibition. POISON has captured the imagination for millennia. It appears in folk tales, fairy tales, opera and murder mysteries. Poisoning has been the clean, classic way evil characters subdue and eliminate a rival without the use of brute force. But poison is not just a substance used to remove inconvenient competition. It is more than our romantic notions of hemlock and horror, and the artists of Curious Matter’s POISON exhibition have sensitively distilled the tincture to find its purest forms.

    Exhibition: Poison, a group exhibition
    Dates: April 5 – May 17, 2009
Gallery Hours: Sundays noon to 3:00pm and by appointment
Location: Curious Matter, 272 Fifth Street, Jersey City, NJ
