This Weekend’s Best Bets

- Chilltown’s quarterly arts orgasm has arrived once again. There are events all day — and night — long at venues all around the city (not just Downtown, folks). Way too many worthy shows, openings and performances to go through them here. Check out the full schedule, and check out JCI contributor Irene Borngraeber’s picks over at the Left Bank Art Blog.
- As part of JC Fridays, there’s a special Groove on Grove this evening, and as we just noted, they’ve got a tent so nevermind this rain. It all starts at 6 pm at the Grove Street PATH Station plaza, with the Black Hollies up first, followed by The One and Nines at 7 pm, The Milwaukees at 8 pm and Jupiter One at 9 pm.
- Can’t get enough of the Black Hollies? Well, they’re playing again later this evening as part of For the Love of Music’s showcase at Grand Banks (75 Montgomery St.). They’ll be joined by fellow Jersey City faves Any Day Parade and the Fringe Dwellers, as well as New York’s Nouvellas. There’s a $10 cover, but it’s worth checking out how the live music works out in this venue. All starts at 10 pm.
- If you prefer animation, then head up to the Loew’s Jersey (54 Journal Square) for a screening of the Oscar-winning anime film Spirited Away at 8 pm.
SATURDAY
No time to recover from Friday. Saturday’s got just as much going on around town.
- Up at the Reservoir #3, there’s the annual Fishing Derby — it starts at 10 am. The weather looks much better for tomorrow, so even if you don’t want to fish, it might be a good day to check out the Reservoir.
- The documentary Trouble the Water is screening at LITM (140 Newark Ave.) at 1 pm as a fundraiser for the NOLA Preservation Society. After the film is over, director Tia Lessin will partake in a Q&A.
- The Phillipino award-winning film Jay will be shown at Lenapeeps Art Gallery (704 Grand St. unit 2) at 6 pm, and the director of this one (Francis X Pasion) will also be on hand for the free screening.
- A new exhibit focusing on sound as an art form — “The Resonating Object” — opens at the Lex Leonard Gallery (143 Columbus Dr.) at 7 pm. The show includes work from Amanda Barrett, Mark Cannariato, Michael Dooling, Jeph Jerman, Michael Slagle and Gocha Tsinadze; the opening will feature live sound performances.
- The animation continues at the Loew’s, with the classic Who Framed Roger Rabbit? screening Saturday night at at 7:30 pm.
- It’s an upbeat, dancey rock kinda night at IM Automata Chino (99 Greene St.), with Cleveland’s HotChaCha, Brooklyn’s little, big, NJ’s own Secret Photos and NYC’s The Unstoppable Death Machines.
SUNDAY
- The Jersey City Cultural Arts Festival is at Liberty State Park’s Central Railroad Terminal from 1-7 pm. The event has live music, arts, crafts, kids activities, and all that kind of good stuff. Plus, the weather’s looking good again for Sunday, so you don’t even need an excuse to get out to Liberty State Park.
- The Liberty Humane Society’s “Cat Social” fundraiser is at The Moose Lodge (60 West Side Ave.) from 1-4 pm. The event features food, raffles, giveaways and product vendors, and Jersey City veterinarian Dr. Cynthia Thornton will give a lecture on health and behavior problems common among shelter and rescue cats. $25 at the door; all proceeds will go towards helping animals currently at the shelter.
