By Jon Whiten • Jun 17th, 2009 • Category: Blog- At tonight’s meeting, the City Council will consider the revised proposed settlement between the city, the state and PPG Industries to clean up chromium contaminated land along Garfield Avenue. The city held a public hearing on the newest version of the settlement on Monday night, and has further amended the agreement to include a provision for the remediation of contaminated groundwater and the creation of a Community Oversight Committee. - Also on the council agenda for tonight: An extension of the tax abatement for the Crystal Point luxury condo building on the Hudson River. Read more about the ordinance in our coverage of the previous council meeting.
- The county has dropped its planned furlough day for workers, which was slated to be June 29.
- The 22nd Annual Gooch’s Garlic Run, a motorcycle charity event benefiting children with catastrophic illnesses, will come through the Holland Tunnel between 8-9 pm tonight. Motorists: expect delays.
- Eight new police officers were sworn in at a ceremony at NJCU yesterday, and Deputy Chief Peter Nalbach was honored for 32 years of dedicated service to the department.
In statewide news:
- Citing a lack of evidence, a federal court has overturned the conviction of Paul Kamienski, who had been found guilty of acting as an accomplice to two murders in 1983. He had been in a New Jersey prison for 22 years.
- Doctors say a cut in the number of physicians at state psychiatric hospitals has reduced the quality of patient care, forcing psychiatrists to handle medical issues many have not dealt with for years.
- The state Department of Health and Senior Services has announced the first death of a New Jersey resident that was related to swine flu. The state says the 49-year-old Essex County man had multiple underlying medical conditions.
- The state Economic Development Authority has launched a new program that will offer interest-free loans of up to $5 million for businesses that invest in energy-efficient projects; combined heat and power, or cogeneration, production facilities; select renewable energy sources; or efficient electric-generation facilities.
- Two New Jersey pharmaceutical giants — Merck and Schering-Plough — have set meetings to vote on a pending merger.
- The Republican Governors Association, a national group that is backing Chris Christie, is attacking Gov. Corzine’s record and campaign promises in new ads.
