By Jon Whiten • Jun 18th, 2009 • Category: Blog- The City Council voted 8-1 last night in favor of approving a settlement with PPG Industries to clean up chromium-contaminated land along Garfield Avenue and elsewhere in Jersey City. Ward E councilman Steven Fulop was the lone “no” vote.
- The City Council also voted to approve an amendment to the Crystal Point luxury condo developer’s tax abatement. The amendment, requested by the developer, extends the length of the PILOT from 20 to 30 years, and reduces the percentage of annual gross revenue paid from 16 to 11 percent for the first five years, with 13 percent payments for the next five years, and 16 percent payments for the final 20 years.
- A 51-year-old man was the victim of a gruesome hit-and-run on Marin Boulevard and 6th Street on Saturday afternoon. The police are still looking for the driver, who was flying down Marin, and they released surveillance video of the collision yesterday.
- Hudson County officials approved a plan last night to scoop out part of the Palisades in North Bergen to build a strip mall along River Road.
- Jersey City singer Arianne Whyte has been chosen as one of three finalists of WPLJ-FM’s “Sing to Win” competition.
In statewide news:
- Sen. Bob Menendez voted against a major energy bill approved today by a Senate committee, saying there was too much emphasis on oil and coal and not enough on wind, solar and other renewable energy sources.
