Fulop Calls for Vega’s Immediate Resignation

By • Jul 23rd, 2009 • Category: Blog, News, Politics

Ward E City Council representative Steven Fulop has issued a statement calling for the immediate resignation of City Council president Mariano Vega, as well as Deputy Mayor Leona Beldini, in the wake of today’s momentous federal corruption arrests.

“Yet again, we are disgraced by the conduct of our city’s leadership and the far-reaching embarrassment their actions bring to the city. While the individuals named in today’s indictments deserve their day in court, the sheer scale and widespread nature of the allegations is an outrage to the people of our city,” Fulop says in a statement. “Going forward, Vega’s every vote will be tainted on the council and it is impossible at this point that either the Deputy Mayor or Council President can adequately represent the people of Jersey City with this cloud of suspicion hanging over them.”

i’m assuming you’re referring to the corruption detailed in the federal complaints, right, and not fulop’s call for resignations?

The ghost of Mayor Hague strikes again. Hudson county politics make strange bedfellows and it seems that a lot of people were caught in bed today. This domino effect is not over. Special elections will be forthcoming and Corzine have some concerns. My big question is: Where iss Mayor Healy? Why has he not issued a statement?
    Was 5k worth the humiliation?

Indeed, this is a big bed and you’re absolutely right that it’s not even close to being over.

Healy did issue a statement this afternoon, part of which we ran — the only notable part was that he said all seven of the city employees caught up in this have been suspended without pay: http://bit.ly/rhBoK

I’ve only lived here for two years, but is it really believable that Mayor Healy knew nothing? When his lieutenant and one of the guys on his ticket are both implicated?

E.W. — Oh, it’s not believable at all. More on that will come to light soon enough.

“Far-reaching embarrassment” is right, Steve! Here I am, a former JC resident (who was active in civic affairs and a volunteer for Steve during his first run for his Ward E council seat) now living in Tucson, AZ, and reeling from today’s news. I’d already moved to Monmouth County before Steve’s initial victory, and I can’t say I did all that much to help him, but his victory over the deeply entrenched machine politics in Hudson County, specifically JC, was a thrill and spark of hope that remain with me to this day.

I’m happy, but not surprised, that Steve chose to remain independent. YES!!!!!!!!! At least my faith and belief in him was not misplaced, as it was in Louis Manzo, but more on Lou later. I can’t imagine that Healy’s hands are clean in this scandal, and if he’s next in line for the silver bracelets, I hope his arrest will pave the way for Steve to become mayor. With Steve at the helm, Jersey City could finally fully escape its heretofore inextricable tie with that filthy machine. I’d like to see him usher in a new era.

As for Lou… Lou, Lou, Lou…why? Why did you EVER listen to Ron?

A conviction may well nullify all the good Lou has accomplished. I lived in one of Lefrak’s waterfront developments, and I know that Lou was responsible for the environmental cleanup that the Lefrak Organization was required to do before plunking a building down on top of that mound of pollutants. Ack. I can’t even continue. I’m so disappointed. I was such a champion of his and volunteered during his third (or was it fourth?) mayoral run. I still wear my green-and-yellow “Manzo for Mayor” T-shirt frequently. But I won’t do so any more.

If Lou had not been among those in the walk of shame, I’d be completely happy to know that the end of corruption in Hudson County is finally nigh.

Jon, if you know Steve, please give him my regards and let him know that even from afar, I still support him and he makes me proud.

P.S. It sure says a lot that Steve is calling for the resignation of Vega and Beldini. It’s what Healy should be doing. Suspension without pay doesn’t cut it! Well, I say to you JC residents, if it wasn’t apparent to you before, it should be apparent to you now that Steve Fulop is a genuine incorruptible LEADER. Wake the hell up!
