Raymaker to Pick Up Lawsuit Against Lopez
By Shane Smith • Aug 6th, 2009 • Category: Blog, News, PoliticsIn a column in today’s Star-Ledger, Paul Mulshine reports that Norrice Raymaker, who ran this year for the Ward C council seat on the One Jersey City ticket, is taking up Jimmy King’s lawsuit seeking to disqualify Ward C Councilwoman Nidia Rivera Lopez from her new position.
Lopez is accused of claiming Florida residency in order to receive a homestead rebate; the lawsuit charges that her out-of-state residency disqualifies her from holding office in Jersey City.
King also ran for the Ward C seat, but dropped the suit after being arrested as part of last month’s corruption busts.
Raymaker could not be immediately reached for comment, but One Jersey City mayoral candidate Dan Levin confirmed the news by phone this morning. “We believe that Jersey City deserves government that can represent constituents,” Levin said. He vowed that One Jersey City “will continue to pursue the legal remedies” against Lopez.
A message left for Lopez at her council office was not immediately returned. However, speaking to JCI Wednesday at the North District National Night Out event in Pershing Field, Lopez said that she “[has] done absolutely nothing wrong.”
