- Despite rumors to the contrary, 31st District Assemblyman L. Harvey Smith has announced he will not resign his post, even though he has been charged with accepting bribes totaling $15,000 as part of last month’s federal corruption bust. Smith’s pay and benefits have been suspended by Assembly Speaker Joe Roberts, and Smith’s term ends in December.

- Police Chief Tom Comey and Deputy Chief Peter Nalbach held a press conference yesterday to defend their tactics during a Reed Street shootout that resulted in the deaths of Police Officer Marc DiNardo and two suspects.

- Angela Bellizzi, a supervisor with the Municipal Utilities Authority (MUA), admitted in federal court that she took hundreds of dollars in bribes in exchange for falsifying documents to obtain discounts on permits. Bellizzi’s guilty plea is unrelated to the massive corruption bust that took place two weeks ago. She was fired from the MUA yesterday upon entering her plea.

- Harbor View Health Care Center on Ogden Avenue is one of three nursing homes in the county where union workers will strike this weekend.

- Former 32nd District Assemblyman Anthony Impreveduto died yesterday after a battle with lymphoma.

- “The Street Stops Here,” a documentary about Bob Hurley, the legendary coach of the St. Anthony High School basketball team, will be featured at the New Jersey Film Festival this fall.

In statewide news:

- Rating agency Standard & Poor’s maintained New Jersey’s credit rating despite concerns about the state’s “above average” debt load and low pension funding. Earlier this week, Moody’s rating service dropped New Jersey’s credit rating from “stable” to “negative.”
