Vigil Today Will Focus on Immigration
By Jon Whiten • Sep 15th, 2009 • Category: BlogA 4 pm vigil in McGinley Square (Bergen Avenue and Montgomery Street) today will feature critics of immigration policies, specifically the deportation of immigrant parents of children born in the U.S. The vigils are being held around the state and are timely, considering that several law enforcement institutions in New Jersey, including the Hudson County Jail, have signed on to the Department of Homeland Security’s controversial 287(g) program. Speakers at the event are expected to describe their personal experiences of raids, detentions and deportations.
The vigils are sponsored by a coalition that includes the ACLU-NJ and various immigrant rights and church groups.
