The 2009 Barclays golf tournament, which was held last month here in Jersey City, says it raised a total of $111,780 through the Tickets Fore Charity program, in which nonprofit organizations promoted tournament tickets to benefit their organization. A total of 114 charities — including 35 based in Jersey City — took place in the program.

While the American Red Cross of Northern New Jersey raised the most cash, with $8,055 in ticket sales, two Jersey City organizations came in second and third.

The Jersey City Fraternal Order of Police came in second with $6,255 in ticket sales, and St. Peter’s Prep came in third with $5,625. Their victories earned them tee time at Liberty National and a pin flag signed by tournament champion Heath Slocum, respectively.

“This unique program has allowed local charities the opportunity to continue to assist those in need. To my knowledge, there is no other professional sports program that has such a dramatic impact in the community where events take place,” Detective Ed Dolan said in a statement. “The Jersey City Police Department has a saying when it comes to the men, women and children in our community: We care. I now have had the opportunity to learn first hand we are not alone in our mission. The PGA tour cares also, and for that we are grateful.”
