Wednesday Morning News Roundup
By Jon Whiten • Oct 28th, 2009 • Category: Blog- Several items of note on tonight’s City Council agenda: the allocation of $5 million in Recovery Zone Facility Bonds to the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation, which got a massive incentive package from the state and the city to bring 1,600 existing jobs over to Jersey City; shifts to rent laws that would allow low-income landlords to raise the rents on their low-income tenants; and the approval of a JCPD purchase of four more police dogs and SUVs to transport them in.
- A 28-year-old Jersey City man allegedly killed himself at a North Bergen motel yesterday.
Today’s Best Bets:
After a re-dedication ceremony of Melvin Edwards’ “Holder of the Light” public artwork at the Lafayette Senior Living Center, there will be a forum on public art at the Jersey City Museum, featuring local artists and critics (including JCI contributor Irene Borngraeber). Later on is the first night to catch the Haunted Terminal tours at Liberty State Park.
In statewide news:
- A new Quinnipiac University poll shows Gov. Corzine with his first lead in nearly a year. The poll of likely voters has Corzine ahead of Republican Chris Christie by a 43 to 38 percent margin, with independent Chris Daggett coming in at 13 percent.
- With the World Series beginning tomorrow, the state’s baseball loyalties are divided among Phillies and Yankees fans. (Woe are the state’s Mets fans, myself included.)
