I had a very hard time with their visit. I read this and my initial reaction was a general disbelief that the WBC can get this close to a diverse and vibrant city with their hate speech. Then I felt filled with hate and rage from the vile they preach. After some more thought, it is clear to me that they are part of the human diaspora that I need to respect. It is unfortunate their message is against most people and God but I respect free speech on both sides! Thanks Shane and JCI for covering this and all the other interesting and in depth stories about my hometown.

Glad you liked the piece, Henry. I wouldn’t take WBC’s choice to picket at DHS personally – based on my conversations with Shirley Phelps-Roper I think they chose the location mostly because it’s a large school in an urban area and their primary purpose was to draw the attention of school administrators.

I was a student at this so called “Doomed” High school. In fact, I actually went to a pizza parlor( Larry and Joes, great place!) away from them and gave them no attention whatsoever because that’s what they want. Attention. I am a senior, and it’s sad that people we never heard of, “Know” so much about “us”. I had intention of just standing across from them and just smile because I won’t fuel their cause and give them more reason to do the things they do by letting their meager attempts to get under my skin and offend me. The students that actually stopped to see them, were…roughly a 20% of the total population of DHS, where if their would have been more, let’s say the rain are the least of their worries. Anyway, thanks for this little article Shane. =)
