Last week the Board of Commissioners of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey authorized an additional $2 million for planning the replacement of the PATH train’s s No. 8 substation east of the New Jersey Turnpike in Kearny. The substation converts high-voltage power into usable levels for the trains.

The PATH system has ten substations, which range in age from 17 to 40 years old. Port Authority spokesman Steve Coleman says the No. 8 substation “is closer to 40 years old.” The Port Authority authorized a $47.6 million replacement and upgrade project for the No. 7 substation in February.
