This Weekend’s Best Bets
By Jon Whiten • Nov 27th, 2009 • Category: Arts, BlogIt’s a lighter-than-usual offering of cultural goings-on this weekend, but that doesn’t mean Chilltown is a Ghost Town. Here are some of our Best Bets.
TODAY
There’s an opening reception tonight from 6-8 pm at Fish With Braids Gallery for Uno’s “Black & Whites” series, which pays tribute to female artists and activists like Angie Davis, Benazir Bhutto, Lady Day, Amy Winehouse, Sarah Vaughn, Fannie Lou Hamer and others. There’s also a special free post-Thanksgiving show at 8 pm at the Miller Branch Library, featuring Joe Bataan, Soul Generation and PRIME. A little later in the evening, and a little to the north, Jersey City rockers The Milwaukees will perform at Maxwell’s in Hoboken, showcasing many of the songs the band has been recording for some upcoming releases.
SATURDAY
A night of comedy is slated for the Loew’s Theatre, featuring Mike Marino and Mark Byrnes, along with special guest Vincent Pastore (best known from his role as Salvatore “Big Pussy” Bonpensiero on The Sopranos). Proceeds from the show will benefit the Jersey City Police Foundation and the Jersey City Firefighters Relief Fund. In the live music department, The Nolan Gate will play at the Lamp Post around 10 pm.
