Live in JC: Any Day Parade at 58 Gallery

JC Fridays are a great reason to get out and enjoy the local art and music scene in Jersey City. It’s local, there are a bunch of talented folks putting it out there, and for the most part the events are totally free.
I started off my most recent JC Fridays night — Dec. 4 — at the new Jersey City Art School on 5th Street, where Thomas Carlson and friends have constructed courses in their new storefront for people looking to learn the basics of painting, drawing and working with stained glass.
Afterward, I ran down a few streets to check out some live music by Any Day Parade at the 58 Gallery. This charismatic quintet just released a new EP, Where We Fall, and are fresh off a U.S. tour. Tree (vocals, guitar) Larry Brinkman (vocals, guitar) and Joe Daly (vocals, guitar) serve up the frontline to a host of songs about drinking and heartbreak, with Chuck Daly (bass) and Patrick Byrne (drums) bearing down for rhythm support. This is one of the must-see — or I should say must-hear — groups in Jersey City. In the past year and a half that I’ve known about this band, they’ve been making some serious (and well-deserved) career gains — you can even get their songs on iTunes now!
After the show Larry and I talked about one of his and Tree’s favorite books (James Ellroy’s American Tabloid) while we marveled the art exhibition “Animalia” by Dana Gannon (up at 58 through Dec. 28). Any Day Parade has several shows coming up soon; they’ll be at Hank’s Saloon in Brooklyn this Saturday, and come February they’ll be back on this side of the river with a show at Maxwell’s.
