Transit Providers Get Ready for the Snow

With forecasts calling for the potential of a foot of snow in the area, the Port Authority and NJ Transit both say they are ready.

“Our professional staff is geared up and ready to go this weekend,” Port Authority executive director Chris Ward says. “When snow is in the forecast, our mission is clear. We must make sure that our tunnels, bridges and rail system continue to operate safely and efficiently.”

In regards to the PATH train, the Port Authority says it has an arsenal of snow-fighting equipment ready to go, including plow-equipped trains, liquid snow-melting agent trains and what it calls a “jet engine” plow to remove snow from tracks.

Likewise, NJ Transit says the snow shouldn’t change its service over the weekend, as it has extra staff on call and is ready to go with weatherized locomotives and 515 tons of salt ready to be used at NJ Transit facilities.

Of course, if you’re traveling this weekend you should check the PATH Alerts website or the NJ Transit website for the most up-to-the-minute information on delays and service changes.
