Several Jersey City Programs Get Boost from Horizon Foundation Grants
By Jon Whiten • Dec 30th, 2009 • Category: BlogAs we noted in this morning’s News Roundup, the Puerto Rican Family Institute plans on using a $30,000 grant from the Horizon Foundation for New Jersey to fund its Diabetes Outreach program. But three other programs operating in Jersey City received grant money from the foundation as well as part of $1.9 million in grants to 96 New Jersey organizations.
- ASPIRA, Inc. of New Jersey, which is based in Newark, received a grant of $15,000 to support the Promoting Safe Communities in Newark and Jersey City Initiative, a component of the group’s Leadership and Dropout Prevention Program. This bilingual curriculum that promotes AIDS/HIV awareness and education is for Latino students and parents in New Jersey’s two largest cities.
- Newark-based Helen Keller International received a grant of $10,000 to support its ChildSight New Jersey Initiative; the program provides in-school vision screenings for low-income students in Jersey City public schools and provides students with free eyeglasses and follow-up assessments and care as needed. The program also operates in public schools in Newark, Irvington, Passaic, Plainfield, East Orange and Orange public schools.
- Little Kids Rock, which is based in Montclair, received a grant of $5,000 for its Jersey City and Newark Area Expansion Initiative. The program supports teachers who volunteer to teach children how to play musical instruments, and provides curriculum essentials and free instruments for economically-disadvantaged children in the program.
