This Weekend’s Best Bets
By Shane Smith • Jan 8th, 2010 • Category: Arts, BlogDon’t let a little dusting of snow keep you indoors this weekend; there’s plenty to do! Remember to check our cultural calendar for full listings.
TODAY
The Creative Grove Artist Market will be at its usual location, the Grove Street PATH Plaza, starting at 2 pm. The opening reception for a new show by painter Hugh Dwyer, with live jazz from Jordan Piper, is at Made With Love at 8 pm. Also at 8, the Stockinette Knitting Cafe’s BYOB comedy night, which showcases local comics, returns.
SATURDAY
Get your Irish (ancestors) up at an 11 am talk on “Researching Your Irish” heritage, hosted by the Hudson County Genealogical Society. At 1, feed the 9/11 conspiracy theorist lurking inside you by taking in Loose Change 9/11: An American Coup, a film that “examines mysterious and infamous events that reshaped world history.” And for you live music hounds, the Lamp Post hosts Brooklyn’s Guitar Bomb and the Michigan hardcore outfit Black Birds, starting at 10 pm.
SUNDAY
Chillfest, “the mostly gay and lesbian film series of Jersey City,” returns to LITM from its holiday hiatus at 4 pm. This month’s offering is Hannah Free — stick around for a Kurosawa retrospective featuring Rashomon at 6 and Seven Samurai at 8. Or if you’re still in the holiday spirit, stop by St. Michael’s Church on 9th Street for an Epiphany concert by the St. Michael Singers.
