Is a Snowpocalypse in Store for Jersey City? Probably Not

While the mid-Atlantic region braces for a potential 2 foot snowfall today, and South Jersey begins to hunker down for a possible blizzard, should we all scramble for the grocery store today and stock up for a massive snowstorm? After all, the local TV news is giving the coming snowstorm the kind of wall-to-wall coverage that rivals the Y2K phenomenon. Should we be worried?

The short answer: probably not.

While parts of Central and South Jersey — particularly the coastal regions — could get somewhere around a foot of snow, the National Weather Service (NWS) is currently only predicting a total accumulation of between 2 and 5 inches in Jersey City.

However — and here’s the longer answer — the NWS does say that could change.

“There remains a great deal of uncertainty on the amount of snowfall, as the forecast area will be along the northern edge of the storm system. A small deviation in track will have significant impacts,” the service reports in its latest update. Basically, if the storm tracks further north, we could get more snow. If it tracks further south, we might not get any at all.

In any event, local transit providers are gearing up, as usual. The Port Authority says it is ready to clear snow on the PATH train lines, and NJ Transit says it will cross-honor all tickets, so you can use train tickets on the bus — and bus tickets on the train — if need be.
