Jersey City to Lay Off Nearly 300 Employees

By • Feb 11th, 2010 • Category: Blog, News

Hundreds of seasonal and provisional employees will be terminated on Feb. 26 as the administration attempts to rein in a proposed budget that has many residents fuming about a potential 25 percent property tax increase.

The city confirmed the layoff rumors this afternoon; it will send notice to the 278 affected workers Tuesday. The city predicts the move will save more than $1.3 million between now and June, the end of the 2010 fiscal year. Anticipated savings for the 2011 fiscal year are nearly $4.3 million.

The City Council is currently considering the draft budget for 2010, with a public hearing scheduled for Feb. 24. It is not immediately clear whether the anticipated savings will permit a reduction in the proposed tax hike — and if so, how much of one — but the administration has noted in recent weeks that layoffs have been under consideration since at least late last month, when the draft budget was introduced.

Your title says ‘Lay Off’ and your article says ‘Terminate”, so which is it?

Irregardless, this city has GOT to do more than this. I find it hard to believe that only 300 of these elininates ALL the jobs given to ‘cronies” who got a specific mayor elected.

They have to cut jobs to the bone and make this city in the black again. They can reduce street sweepers to 2 days a week instead of 4. Union City does this and it works for them. Make citizens responsible for making sure their sidewalks and curbs are clean.

Make the healthcare system given to city employees a employee AND boss pad for item if it is not already.

Get county in this too as their costs trickle down to us. In the summer there are not so many county employees needed as they seem to find time to go to Liberty Park and play cards for the afternoon.

There has got to be more ways to. Get cracking Mayor and do your job for once.

Dorothy- We are using the terms “lay off” and “terminate” interchangeably here. These workers will no longer be working for the city.
