This Weekend’s Best Bets

You might have noticed that its snowing a wee bit out there. Be sure to call any venue that’s hosting an event you want to attend to confirm it is still on. That being said, if you want to get out and brave the snow, there are plenty of cultural offerings scheduled around town this weekend. As always, check our full Cultural Calendar for Jersey City’s most comprehensive listings. Meanwhile, here are our Best Bets for your weekend.

TODAY

A snowstorm always has a way of making the Hudson River look even more majestic than usual; could be a good evening to swing by Michael Anthony’s to check out free live jazz from the Don Carter Trio (6 pm) and admire the view. The Loew’s is playing host to a series of films from the 1940s this weekend; tonight the classic White Heat screens at 8 pm. The Attic Ensemble‘s production of The Pillowman is back tonight at 8 pm (performances run all weekend as well — Saturday at 8 pm and Sunday at 3 pm). Meanwhile, local soulsters the One & Nines play a free show with Kiwi the Child at O’Haras Downtown, and Jersey City punk troupe Guilt Trip plays at the Iron Monkey with Radio Exiles.

SATURDAY

The 40s films continue at the Loew’s this evening with Hitchcock’s Notorious at 6:15 pm, followed by The Third Man at 8:30 pm. Con Vivo’s Bach Festival continues tonight with a performance of Bach’s Cantata no. 82, “Ich Habe Genug,” sung by mezzo soprano Sarah Nelson Craft. She’ll be backed by the Con Vivo Ensemble and harpsichord. That’s at Grace Church at 8 pm.

SUNDAY

The Egyptian National Folkloric Dance Troupe will be at the Loew’s for a performance at 2 pm. At 4 pm, “Ladies on the Mic” will bring Christine Goodman, Anna Olson Nugent, Wendy Weber Eaton, Kate Kaiser and Beth Achenbach to the mic to read and perform at Made With Love (4 pm). And it’s Godfather mania at LITM tonight, with back-to-back screenings of The Godfather and The Godfather, Part II, starting at 6 pm.
