Sixteen Candidates File for Board of Education Election

By • Mar 3rd, 2010 • Category: Blog, News, Politics

Monday was the deadline for prospective candidates to file their paperwork for the April 20 Board of Education election, which will fill three seats on the nine-seat board for a three-year term. A total of 16 candidates, including all three incumbents whose terms are up — Terry Dehere, Gerry McCann and Angel Valentin — are running.

Here are the names of the other 13 candidates that filed: Kevin Armstrong, Sebastian D’Amico, Evelyn Farmer, Carol Lester, Gerald Maurice Lyons, June Mulqueen, John Muniz, Marimer Navarrete, Aura Ordonez, Hiral Patel, Anthony Sharperson, Sterling Waterman and Arthur Zigman.

Like last year, we will run a series of Q&As with the candidates in the weeks leading up to the election. The last day to register to vote, or change your registration address, is March 30. More information on that can be found on this PDF.

Let’s support our Jersey City teachers by NOT voting in the incumbents Terry Dehere & Gerry McCann. They don’t care about the educational system, but rather favors they can do for others.

Currently streaming off the TP website and airing for the next 2 weeks is my show with guests Jerry McCann & Terry Dehere, who are members of the JC Board of Ed. Hear about the current status of the expired teachers’ contract and their demands for 4+% annual increases, devastating cuts in state aid, Superintendent of School Dr Epps contract which expires 6/30/2011 and other school issues. Very informative and the schools cost every taxpayer approx 25% of your tax bill…. JC is an Abbott District with a $630 MILLION budget facing severe cuts in state funding. An additional cut of 15% on top of the $3.6 million cut will be devastating both for the students, school personnel and JC taxpayers. Learn more about the issues. The following 2 shows will feature 8 candidates running for JCBOE… Stay tuned.

I appreciate the commitment it takes to run for the JC Board of Education, but this year and the ones to follow will be very difficult and challenging. Business as usual for the JC BOE is about to change, regardless of who win this election.

To make an informed decision, the following question is one that I believe the JCI should ask each candidate to respond to:

    Background to the Question:
The Jersey City Board of Education budget far eclipses the size of the City of Jersey City budget, weighing in at over $600,000,000 — with much waste and inefficiency reflected in those numbers. Given the crisis in state funding, and potentially significant cuts in state funding over the next few years, taxpayers are potentially facing increases in school taxes similar to what’s now occurring with the City’s own budget. In short, the next School Board will be faced with an increasingly complex balancing act.

Q: As a school board member, how would you propose we balance the school budget without radically increasing school taxes, and still deliver measurable improvements in student performance? Simply put, is it possible to deliver improvements in the quality of education our children deserve, and simultaneously address the budgetary challenges, or does something have to give? If something has to give, what might that be?

    All the best.

    Hi Geoff,

We are currently finalizing our Qs to BOE candidates, and we were definitely planning to ask something along those lines — thanks for your input and your suggestion. It is a very important issue.
