School Board Candidates’ Forum Tonight; Voter Reg. Deadline Fast Approaching

As the state deals with its budget problems by cutting aid to school districts, and the current Board of Education wrestles with the teachers union over a new contract, there are plenty of hot topics in education this year.

These and other issues will likely be discussed at tonight’s first public forum for candidates running for three seats on the Jersey City Board of Education. There are 16 candidates running in the April 20 election. (We recently sent out our annual questionnaires to all candidates and will share their answers next month.)

The forum, which has been put together by Parents and Communities United for Education, is tonight, March 25, at 6 pm at Metropolitan AME Zion Church (140 Belmont Ave.).

Meanwhile, the deadline for registration and transfers to vote in the school board election is Tuesday, March 30. The registration office — located at 257 Cornelison Ave., 4th Floor — will be open late (until 9 pm) that evening. For more information on registration, call the office at 201-369-7793.
