It also mandates that all Tax Enhancement committee meetings be advertised and open to the public.
- Funeral for Murdered Woman: Nearly 1,000 mourners paid tearful final respects yesterday to the 25-year-old Jersey City woman slain with her fiance when they returned home from their engagement party early Sunday. The woman’s mother tells the Journal she lived a “solid, filled life.” The funeral for her 27-year-old fiance is today.
- Jersey City’s Eroding Waterfront: Shorelines at Paulus Hook’s Peninsula Park and another section of Liberty State Park are rapidly eroding.
- Rebuilding Day: More than 500 people are expected to help rehabilitate six homes and six community facilities tomorrow in Jersey City, employing skills ranging from electrical repairs to building wheelchair ramps, as part of the annual Rebuilding Together Jersey City’s 20th annual “Rebuilding Day.”
- Mark Finne Opens Show in ‘Boken: Jersey City artist Mark Finne’s latest exhibition, “Re-Cycle-D,” opens Sunday at Hoboken’s Paul Vincent Gallery.
- Woman Reunited with ‘Napped Dog: The woman whose dog was snatched last weekend in Journal Square has her beloved pooch back.
- Journal Picks Up Some Awards: The Jersey Journal was awarded 11 prizes at last night’s New Jersey Press Association dinner in Trenton.
In Statewide News:
- Cities and Towns Fight Property Tax Cap: Already reeling from a $445 million cut in state funding, New Jersey municipalities are fighting Gov. Christie’s proposal to punish them for raising property taxes more than 4 percent.
- Sweeney Will Bring High-Earners Tax Back: Senate president Steve Sweeney says that if he and other leading Democrats can’t come to an agreement with Gov. Christie on reinstating the tax increase on residents making more than $400,000, he will re-introduce the measure later this year.
- Unlikely Allies Against Development Bill: Local government officials and environmentalists are calling on Gov. Christie to veto legislation they believe would undermine local zoning, planning and environmental protections.
- Psychologists Sue Health Providers: The New Jersey Psychological Association has sued Magellan Health Services, Horizon Healthcare Services and the state Health Benefits Commission, charging the two health care providers and the administrative agency with trying to force psychologists to disclose confidential patient information about the details and necessity of post-rape counseling sessions in order to get paid.
- Tax Preparers Charged: A group of tax preparers in New York and New Jersey have been charged with filing 35,000 suspected fraudulent returns that cost the government tens of millions of dollars in tax revenue.
