People for and against a plan to bring a Formula One race to Liberty State Park spoke out on Sunday at an annual Friends of Liberty State Park lunch. The city says it is in “preliminary discussions” for a five-year contract for the once-a-year event, which would require the construction of a 3.6-mile track inside the park. Hudson County freeholder Bill O’Dea, among others, is against the idea, telling the Journal “it doesn’t make any sense to me whatsoever.”
- Hazmat Crew Responds to Chemicals: The state is investigating illegal chemical dumping in Jersey City after the fire department’s hazmat unit was called to deal with a puddle of a green, acrid-smelling liquid on Fairmount Avenue yesterday.
- Bob Menendez in D.C.: “A force to be reckoned with on national stage,” writes Josh Margolin in a profile.

- Christie’s Supreme Court Nominee: Gov. Christie’s nomination of Morristown attorney Anne Murray Patterson to replace Justice John E. Wallace Jr. on the state Supreme Court is meeting with strong opposition from Democratic legislative leaders. More on the decision’s impact, and Patterson’s background here, here and here.
- In D.C., Christie Touts Vouchers: Gov. Christie said yesterday that a voucher system that lets any child in New Jersey go to any school, public or private, is the “final solution” to an overly expensive system that continues to fail too many children.
- Not Much Participation in License Plate Decal Program So Far: Fewer than one in four New Jersey teen drivers had purchased decals that the law that requires them to display on their license plates as of Saturday.
