Jersey City’s Alfa Demmellash and Alex Forrester will receive honorary doctorate degrees from New Jersey City University (NJCU) at the school’s commencement ceremony on Wednesday, May 12, at the IZOD Center in the Meadowlands.
Demmellash and Forrester are the co-founders and CEO and COO, respectively, of Rising Tide Capital, the Jersey City nonprofit that supports underserved entrepreneurs in low-income urban areas.
The organization, which was founded in 2004 and is headquartered on Martin Luther King Drive, has quickly gained national and international recognition for its efforts, and has so far graduated 279 entrepreneurs from its Community Business Academy. Many of these budding entrepreneurs have gone on to start their own businesses; most recently, seven of them started new ventures in the first quarter of this year.
The husband-and-wife team won’t be the only ones receiving degrees on Wednesday; NJCU will be conferring undergraduate degrees on 1,092 students and graduate degrees on 420 during the ceremony, which begins at 9:30 am.
