Special Benefit Performance of ‘Stand and Deliver’ by High School Students This Thursday
By Jon Whiten • May 17th, 2010 • Category: Arts, BlogThe 1988 film Stand and Deliver won praise for its real-life story of an inspirational East Los Angeles teacher who turned inner-city children into high-achieving math students.
That teacher, Jaime Escalante, lost his battle with bladder cancer in late March, leaving his family with thousands of dollars in unpaid medical bills.
On Thursday, drama students from Jersey City Arts High School will do their part to chip in with a special benefit performance of the stage adaptation of Stand and Deliver at the Loew’s. All profits from the performance will be donated to Escalante’s family via a trust account created by The Foundation for Advancements in Science & Education, a California nonprofit group.
Tickets for the performance are $10, and may be purchased at the door. Tickets are also available at the school’s drama department, located in room 220 of NJCU’s Grossnickle Hall, between the hours of 8 am and 3 pm. For more information, call 201-200-2173.
