Saturday Softball Game Will Raise Funds for Public School Athletics in Wake of Cuts
By Jon Whiten • May 19th, 2010 • Category: Blog, NewsLast week, the Jersey City school district announced it was laying off 375 employees at the end of next month as it grapples with a difficult budget situation. Downtown Jersey City’s PS #3 has decided to try to bridge the funding gap with a Parents vs. Teachers softball game to benefit the school’s athletics.
“We didn’t originally plan the softball game as a response to the cutbacks, but in light of what’s happening, it’s only appropriate,” says Felicia Palmer, president of the PS #3 Parent Teacher Association. “What should tear us down we’re turning around for good. This challenging situation is drawing the PS#3 community of teachers and parents closer and unifying us in an unprecedented way.”
The game is slated for Saturday, May 22 at 11 am, at Lincoln Park’s softball field (over the bridge near the soccer fields), with a $3 suggested donation.
