Zeytinia Gourmet Food Market Officially Opening in Journal Square

Sorry, Downtowners. Despite the long-percolating rumors of Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s opening at various locales in Downtown Jersey City, tomorrow a gourmet food market will open in the Journal Square area instead.
The grand opening of the Zeytinia Gourmet Market, housed in the CANCOlofts building, is set for 5 pm tomorrow with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring Mayor Healy, Ward C councilwoman Nidia Lopez and others.
The market calls itself a “blend of fresh country market, gourmet shop, small informal eatery, coffee shop and a take-out place,” and it currently operates five other stores in New Jersey, Connecticut and New York. The new store will be open to the public, but will also feature an entrance from inside the luxury-loft condo building.

I just went to check this place out with high hopes of it being a “Garden of Eden” type of gourmet market. Well, I found that it is more like a corner store. I actually can’t believe that they have the nerve to call it a “Fine Food Marketplace”. It was really quite pathetic. It is simply a place for residents of the lofts above to pick up odds and ends like rice, milk, frozen pizza, etc. Why can’t JC have a nice little market to pick up good cheese, meats, olives, produce?
Holly-
I haven’t had the chance to check the market out yet, so thanks for sharing your impressions of the place. So there is no fresh produce or anything like that?
I had figured from their website (http://zeytinia.com/Company.html) that there would be a wide array of offerings…
