Hudson County Community College (HCCC) has announced that Pravin Maheta, the Priest Shastriji of Parsippany’s Sanatan Mandir, will lead the invocation at the college’s commencement ceremony this Thursday at NJ PAC in Newark. He joins Rev. Jesse Jackson, who has already been named the keynote speaker at this year’s commencement, which will feature more than 800 graduates — HCCC’s largest class in history.

“We are honored to have Mr. Maheta leading us in prayer for this wonderful celebration,” HCCC president Dr. Glen Gabert says. “Having both Reverend Jackson and Mr. Maheta is indicative of the incredible richness of our community’s diversity, and their participation in our commencement exercises will make this occasion all the more special.”

Gabert points out that 80 percent of the college’s students are minorities, with students from more than 100 countries who speak 50 different languages in attendance.

Maheta, a native of western India, came to the U.S. in 1979, and he’s been working to create a religious infrastructure throughout the tri-state area ever since.
