New Affordable Housing Development for Seniors, Ocean Pointe, Gets Ribbon Cut Tuesday

The Jersey City Housing Authority (JCHA) and Healy administration officials will unveil the latest part of the long-term redevelopment of the Lafayette Gardens/Morris Canal area Tuesday, May 25.

The apartment buildings, known as Ocean Pointe, are located at 461 Ocean Ave. and include 59 affordable units set aside for senior citizens and over 5,000 square feet of communal space that will house social service programs and medical personnel.

JCHA executive director Maria Maio says the project will make “a significant difference in the lives of our Jersey City seniors.”

Ocean Pointe is the fifth rental community to be completed by the JCHA and its development partner, Michaels Development Company, since the agency received a $34 million federal HOPE VI grant in 2001. The HOPE VI program, which aims to replace tower-style public housing with more integrated, mixed-use projects, has thus far led to the construction of six total projects with nearly 400 units both on and off the site of the original Lafayette Gardens public housing complex. An earlier phase of the Lafayette HOPE VI project recently received a Smart Growth Award for Creative Neighborhood Affordable Housing from New Jersey Future.

All of Ocean Pointe’s one- and two-bedroom apartments feature green building technologies like energy-efficient windows and lighting and Energy Star-rated appliances. Interstate Realty Management will offer the programming for the seniors in the communal space, which includes a game room and a computer lab.

Calling the apartments “another great project” of the JCHA, Mayor Jerramiah Healy praises the development in a statement.

“This building will provide dozens of senior citizens a comfortable and affordable place to live during their golden years, and turns an eyesore of two vacant lots into two beautiful residential buildings,” he says.
