Vigil for Detained Immigrants Slated for This Afternoon
By Jon Whiten • Jul 1st, 2010 • Category: Blog, NewsOver the past few decades, the United States has increasingly relied on detention as an immigration enforcement strategy, and the policy has led to the jailing of tens of thousands of immigrants — 355 of whom are housed in the Hudson County Correctional Center in Kearny. As part of a nationwide demonstration against the detention policy, local advocates are holding a vigil this afternoon in Jersey City.
The demonstration begins at Journal Square at 2 pm; and will end with a 4 pm action in front of the Hudson County Administration Building (595 Newark Ave.).
