TODAY
A trifecta of Make My City week events are going on this evening: the Jersey City Art School hosts a “Cocktails and Art” reception (6 pm); an opening reception for Beyond the Brambles, a new show from the excellent Jersey City artist Jade Kuei, is at Kanibal Home (7 pm); and Anna Fiszman and Marc Landesberg bring the free live jazz to Made with Love (8 pm).
But that’s not all you’ve got to choose from today.
While Hoboken’s St. Ann’s Festival gets all the headlines — and the crowds — the St. Anne’s Festival in the Heights kicks off its three-day run this evening, complete with a live performance by Frank Sinatra impersonator Eric DeLauro (6 pm). A art show originally slated to open a few weeks ago, Culture Crash, will have its opening reception tonight at the Big Loft near Hamilton Park. The show features work rooted in street art and graffiti culture, and all art sales will help raise money for the Jersey City Mural Arts Program (7 pm). What promises to be an exciting and eclectic night of independent music is on tap at Lex Leonard Gallery, with Weed Hounds, Pet Milk and Exploding August (with Snowstorm) all set to perform (8:30 pm). And J CITY Theater continues its run of the comedy Gun-Shy with performances tonight and Saturday at The Underground Theater at St. Michael’s Church (8 pm).
SATURDAY
It’s going to be hot Saturday, but two outdoor events should be fun enough to draw you outdoors. The City of Water Day Festival, featuring kayaking, boat tours and a whole mess of water-related activities, comes to Jersey City for the first time ever (10 am to 3 pm); you can read more about the festival here. And the annual Caribbean Parade and Festival will set off from Lincoln Park at noon, and wind its way Downtown to a reviewing stand at City Hall.
Later on, the Distillery hosts a fundraising night of wine and art for the Riverview Neighborhood Association, which is raising money for the annual movie night it puts on in Riverview Fiske Park (6 pm). If you’re in the mood for music, Kelly Saint Patrick plays a free show at Made with Love (8 pm), and if you’d prefer some spoken-word poetry, Art House Productions hosts Long Branch’s Loser Slam Poetry Team (8 pm).
SUNDAY
Wind down your weekend with a free performance by the NY Exceptions at Liberty State Park (7 pm), or with a screening and discussion of the mumblecore film Team Picture at the Jersey City Art School (7:30 pm).
