Battle of Paulus Hook Commemoration Set for Thursday

On August 19, 1779, what is now Downtown Jersey City was home to a fierce battle in the Revolutionary War. In the Battle of Paulus Hook, Major Light Horse Harry Lee (pictured at right) led revolutionary soldiers on a night assault on the British-controlled fort, taking 158 prisoners in their efforts.
The annual commemoration of the battle is slated for Thursday evening, with a fife and drum corps marching up Washington Street from the Korean War Memorial at the southern foot of the street to Paulus Hook Park at the corner of Grand and Washington.
At the park, there will be a scavenger hunt for children, as well as a retelling of the battle’s history and a singalong. Afterwards, the Light Horse Tavern — Light Horse Harry’s namesake restaurant — will host a toast to the patriots (and free appetizers).
THE DETAILS
Commemoration of the Battle of Paulus Hook; Thursday, August 19 at 6:30 pm; festivities begin at the southern foot of Washington Street.
