By Jon Whiten • Aug 20th, 2010 • Category: Blog- Parking Lot Replaces Housing in Developer’s Plan: The Jersey City Planning Board has approved a Bayonne-based developer’s plans to construct a 436-space parking lot at Grove and 18th streets. Ten years ago, the same developer won Planning Board approval to build two 43-story towers on the site, but the project never got built. The board gave the developer the right to operate an interim parking lot for three years on the condition that it works with planning officials to incorporate more trees into the design.
- Schillari Hit With Assault Charge: Hudson County Sheriff’s Office Chief John Bartucci has accused undersheriff Frank Schillari of assaulting him in the Hudson County Administration Building in an incident apparently captured by security cameras. Schillari is running against incumbent sheriff Juan Perez in this November’s election.
- Pagan to be Sentenced Today: Former New Jersey court administrator Virginia Pagan faces sentencing today after she admitted she fixed more than 200 parking tickets.
- Former Bank Employee Charged in Robberies: A 23-year-old ormer Valley National Bank employee was charged with attempting to rob a Valley National branch in Jersey City yesterday morning after tellers recognized him.
- Multi-Family Apartment Sales: Gebroe-Hammer says it has closed four recent sales of multi-family apartment buildings in Jersey City, for a total of more than $4.4 million.
In Statewide News:
- Wind Power: As expected, Gov. Christie yesterday signed the Offshore Wind Economic Development Act, directing the Board of Public Utilities to establish an offshore-wind renewable-energy certificate program. The legislation is pitched as a way for the state to meet an energy master plan mandate to generate 3,000 megawatts of power from offshore wind by 2020.
- Less Restriction on Bow Hunting: Gov. Christie has signed legislation that changes the perimeter for bow hunting around occupied buildings, bringing it down from 450 to 150 feet.
- Freeholders Get More Oversight: Some county freeholder boards in New Jersey will now have the opportunity to veto specific actions taken by various county authorities, under a measure signed into law this week.
- Christie & the National Spotlight: The Republicans Governor Association says it will release a 20-plus minute film highlighting Gov. Christie’s election and his first eight months in office next month in D.C.
- Horse Racing & Gambling: A poll released this morning finds that New Jersey voters want state government to stay involved in the horse racing industry and to keep out of Atlantic City
