As part of this past weekend’s “Come Home to History” fair celebrating the 350th anniversary of the founding of Bergen, the Hudson County History Advocates and the Jersey City Free Public Library’s New Jersey Room put out a call looking for the families with the longest continuous residency in each of the county’s 12 municipalities.

In Jersey City, that honor went to Charles Kilroy, whose family tree extends back to John Kilroy in 1840; and Laura Revell, a descendant of Mary Casey, whose time here can be traced back to 1846.

Neither of those families came close to having the oldest lines in the entire county, however. That honor went to Mary Lou Vreeland Muller, whose family has lived in the area since 1646 — more than 350 years.
