Jersey City Library Announces 26 Furlough DaysBy Jon Whiten • Oct 12th, 2010 • Category: Blog, News
Though the slated closures of three neighborhood branches are temporarily on hold, the Jersey City Free Public Library is continuing to implement other parts of its austerity plan as it grapples with a budget crisis, announcing Monday that its employees will be forced to take 26 unpaid furlough days between January 4 of 2011 and January 17 of 2012.
Two weeks ago, the library gave notice that it was going to close its three neighborhood branches by December 1, but the branches are staying open for now, as library leadership works with the city to find additional funding. The library also says it will lay off an unspecified number of full-time employees. When we asked about the layoffs two weeks ago, library director Priscilla Gardner said she “really [did] not know at this time” the number of layoffs that will occur; she was in the process of submitting the names to the state Civil Service Commission.
We’ve asked for an update on the layoffs situation, but don’t hold your breath waiting for one. Library leadership has recently decided to stop speaking to JCI on the record after we refused to remove user comments critical of the library from a previous article.
“All factual information that you may need … will always be posted on the library website,” we were told after our most recent request, “so please check it regularly.”
In addition, all six regional branch libraries are now closed on most Saturdays, with the occasional exception.
- Cunningham Branch will be open on November 20
- Five Corners Branch will be open on October 16 and November 27
- Greenville Branch will be open December 4
