PHOTOS: Hurricane Irene Floods Parts of Downtown Jersey City

Hurricane Irene passed through the Jersey City area around 9 am this morning and headed on up the east coast, leaving behind plenty of flooding in low-lying areas of Jersey City, though no major damage has been reported as of yet.
The city’s driving ban has been lifted, but the Jersey City Police Department still advises drivers “to use extreme caution and to only drive if absolutely necessary.”
“If you approach standing water, do not drive through it,” JCPD chief Tom Comey said today.
The following areas as impassable due to flooding, according to the JCPD:
- Newark & Division
- Christopher Columbus Drive & Merseles Street
- Grove & 18th Street
- Grand Street east of Prior to Pacific
- Route 440 between Danforth and Sip Avenue (north and south bound lanes)
- Cornelison between Bright Street and Fairmount Avenue
The city also began closing up its emergency shelters this afternoon, as people slowly began returning to their homes.
