Choreographers, Meet an Emerging Dance Scene: Insurgo Stage Project’s “Your Move” Dance Showcase

Dance with a narrative, dance theater, dancing as comedy and with an eye towards investigating space, movement, and the body.
This is the broad scope that Insurgo Stage Project will be addressing over the course of four nights in November – the 10th to the 13th — for its second annual “Your Move” emerging choreographers showcase. The production will juxtapose 16 choreographers and many interpretations of the art of dance in 15-minute-or-less solo, duet and group performances that Insurgo Stage Project’s artistic director and founder Avianna Perez says helps to put Jersey City on the dance map.
“People aren’t used to going out of New York for dance opportunities,” she says. “We’re expanding the dance world for both the audience and the performers.”
It doesn’t hurt that “Your Move,” which is co-curated with fellow performers Morgan Hille Refakis and Meagan Woods, is produced in conjunction with Art House Productions. This, Perez says, will also help bring out a more diverse audience than those already familiar with dance.
But for those new to an art form that may be difficult to grasp, Perez says not to worry: “Know your interpretation can never be wrong. Stop trying to figure it out, just watch and enjoy it.”
“Dance is a much more open experience, it’s completely yours,” she says.
Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door and can be purchased here. Art House is located at 1 McWilliams Place, Jersey City, NJ.
