Jersey City Installs City’s Fourth Red Light Camera at Newark and Tonnelle Avenues
By Matt Hunger • Jan 4th, 2012 • Category: Blog, NewsJersey City residents might have noticed the red light camera at the intersection of Newark and Tonnelle Avenues that was installed just three days ago. The camera, the fourth in the city, comes as part of the city’s ongoing efforts to rein in reckless driving.
“The intent of our road safety program is to get drivers to obey traffic signals,” said Police Chief Thomas Comey in a prepared statement. “The purpose of this program is to improve public safety and reduce collisions resulting from red-light violations.”
The camera is still in a “warning phase” that will last until 11:59 p.m. on January 30th, 2012. During this time all red light traffic violations will result in a warning letter. Following this phase, anyone caught running the red light will receive an $85 ticket.
Just over two weeks ago the city had installed its third camera. In fact, the city says 16,000 violations have been recorded at the first two locations, one at John F Kennedy Blvd at Communipaw Ave/CR 612 and the other at Jersey Avenue at 18th Street. Each violation is reviewed by the police prior to a ticket being issued.
