Not Yo Mama’s Fourth Annual BlowOut Bash Features Over 75 Vendors, Live Music, Beer & MoreBy Summer Dawn Hortillosa • Jun 21st, 2012 • Category: Arts, Blog, News
With crafts, music, beer, comedy and more, Megan Gulick and Michelle Mumoli of Not Yo Mama’s Affairs say their upcoming fourth annual BlowOut Bash will be their biggest and funnest event yet.
This Saturday, over 75 vendors will sell their goods at the event in the Powerhouse Arts District. Special attractions include a Comedy TENT organized by local comedian Craig Mahoney with 25 comics who will perform throughout the day as well as the Liberty Humane Society’s Puppy Fashion Show. Kids from the Urban Arts program will also get to paint a live pop-up mural with help from Newark artist Mr. Mustart. Councilman Steven Fulop is expected to make a special appearance.
DJs from WFMU will spin music to keep crowds going and several bands will also perform live (look below for a lineup). Food will be provided by vendors like Pita Pizza, Coolhaus, Lizzmonade, All Kinds of Whoopie and Made with Love; beer will be provided by the Hamilton Inn.
Guests can also try their luck in two raffles — one at 4:45 pm, another at around 5:45 — for big prizes from local vendors like House of Minerva accessories and the Jersey City Craft Mafia. Even the NYM swag bags, which will be given to the first 100 attendees, offer a bit of mystery and surprise.
“We’ve got awesome swag bags which are all kind of different because people donated stuff, but some only donated five items, or 10 items, so it’s kind of cool. (For example), House of Minerva donated certificates in increments from $5 to $20, so you’re going to wonder, ‘What’s gonna happen in my bag?’ There are going to be some surprises,” says Gulick.
The pair points out that the event heavily features local acts and goods. “It’s really fun to show people what Jersey City has to offer,” says Gulick, who has previously emphasized how her beloved Chilltown is her true home base.
“I think (this event is) also a statement about what type of caliber Not Yo Mama’s is on and how serious we are about our business and where we want to take it,” says Mumoli, who notes that NYM is one of several local businesses that recently applied for Chase and LivingSocial’s $250,000 Mission: Small Business Grant. At time of publication, NYM has almost 50 of the 250 votes needed to qualify to appear before the contest’s judges.
The two have come a long way since they began promoting local crafters and hosting various events three years ago, and are now focusing their energy on moving beyond their annual BlowOuts. “The fourth annual is still our biggest (event) but we’re expanding and creating series of fairs throughout Jersey City,” says Gulick.
Mumoli says upcoming NYM events include the second part of their Parks and Crafts series at Riverview Fisk Park in the Heights, the SoulSation Music and Wellness Festival down the shore, the Holy Rosary Italian Festival, h-MAG Arts and Music Festival in Hoboken, Parks and Crafts 3 at Van Vorst Park and the Hamilton Park BBQ. Clearly, the ladies have been keeping busy. “It’s crazy but we love it,’ says Mumoli.
The fourth annual BlowOut Bash will be on Saturday from 11 am to 6 pm at First and Warren streets. Entrance is a suggested donation of $5, a portion of the proceeds will go toward the Liberty Humane Society and art supply gift certificates for the Urban Arts kids.
