Group Art Show ‘Summer Love’ at Made With Love Celebrates Lighter Moments of Season
Summer is filled with all sorts of good feelings, like the cool embrace of a pool’s clear waters or the sweet deliciousness of an ice cream cone. Perhaps none is greater, however, than that of being in love.
A new art exhibit opening at Made with Love Artisan Bakery and Cafe this Sunday, “Summer Love,” celebrates both the season and the emotion.
“The whole concept is just what it sounds like,” said curator Andrea Morin. “The concept originally came from (bakery owner Celeste Governanti)…We just wanted something fairly simple, something that would be fun and light. It’s about both summer and love. Some things are more straight about the summertime and some are more about being in love.”
Morin hand-selected the artists for the show, reaching out to those she knew had work that would fit nicely into the concept. Some of her favorites include Lynette Dzikowitz’s line drawings of women on vellum which she cuts out and mounts on other layers of material and Beth Achenbach’s black-and-white photographs of heart graffiti.
Also in the show are collages by Meghan McKee and works by Morin herself.
“Meghan McKee, she’s got these really sweet little collages that are about retro summer fun,” says Morin, adding that the pieces include campfires, airplanes whisking passengers to exotic destinations and more.
“I’m doing some paintings that are about sharing food with somebody,” says Morin. “The people aren’t in the pictures but they show lemonade for two, sorbets for two and cake for two. The lemonade has two straws, the sorbet has two spoons and there are two forks in the cake. It’s just a little moment when you look away… For me, that’s something that’s super romantic, sharing something with somebody you love… and they’re all nice, cool, refreshing things because it’s so hot!”
Other artists featured in the show include Gail-Marie Boykewich (whose work “Teenage Love” is pictured above), Bojana Coklyat, Dave Dziemian and Kayt Hester.
To celebrate the opening, a reception will be held in the bakery, located at 530 Jersey Ave., on Sunday at 5 pm. Hibiscus sangria will be served and organic sweet and savory goods will be on sale.
“I hope people come out and find some summer lovin’!” says Morin.
