Uta Brauser’s Anti-Gun, Armor-Inspired Fashion Line Debuting in Brooklyn

One Jersey City artist is suiting up in the fight against guns.

Uta Brauser, best known as the brains behind Fish with Braids Gallery and the Creative Grove Artist and Designer Market among other local projects, is debuting a new fashion art line that isn’t just inspired by armor, but also incorporates it.

In response to the Newtown, Conn., school shooting and other violent incidents around the country, Brauser has created 16 outfits that will be showcased at “GOT ARMOR?” tonight in Brooklyn as part of Williamsburg Fashion Weekend. While some of the items are simply armor-inspired, others actually use bulletproof material like kevlar, which would help wearers protect themselves, what Brauser says is essential in this violent society.

“With these continued shootings in the schools and everywhere else, where pepole gun owners take the right to decide between life and death, that’s where I am now responding,” she says. “Civilians are now going to dress — civilians who are anti-gun-ownership need to start shielding themselves.”

Her collection includes several bulletproof vests that can be worn as undergarments or above other clothing, bulletproof panels that can be inserted into bags and other traveling cases to make them serve as additional shields and other more playful armor-inspired items. She is also working on several thought-provoking anti-gun T-shirt designs including a baby clutching an AK-47 and a menacing man carrying two large automatic machine guns with the caption “Prepare for 2nd amendment shooters.”

“To me it is absolutely idiotic that people need to own guns for self-defense,” says Brauser, who also rejects arguments that people may need guns to protect themselves against the government. “Where on earth do we live? We’re supposed to be first world — as a first-world country, we should no longer need guns against our government.”

Helping Brauser make her statement will be several artists from JC and the surrounding area including Janice Ducate, Rodina Mikhail, Caridad Rivera, Angela, Shamecca, Lee, Sam Gato and Andres Freeman. DJ Pastiche will spin tunes.

“GOT ARMOR?” will be held tonight, Feb. 15 at 8 pm at Villain, 50 N. Third St., Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Tickets are $10.
