Free Rabies Shots, Vaccinations and More for Dogs and Cats at Pet Owner’s Day

All Jersey City dogs and cats can get vaccinations on Pet Owners’ Day clinics, city officials say.

The clinics, which began last week and are running weekends through May 11, will allow pet owners who live in Jersey City to get free rabies shots for both dogs and cats as well as free wellness shots. Dogs can get a 4-in-1 DA200 shot (Distemper, Adenovirus 2/Hepatitis, Parainfluenza and Parvovirus) and cats can get a 3-in-1 FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus and Panleukopenia or cat distemper).

All dogs must be licensed to receive free shots; cats do not have to be licensed in JC. Bureau of Animal Control personnel will be on hand to help residents take advantage of the “Save on the Fee and Tag Fido for Three” program, where canines are licensed for three years at $20 per neutered dog or $30 per unneutered dog. Residents who wish to license their dogs for only one year will pay $8 for neutered pets, $12 unneutered. No cash will be accepted for licensing; checks and money orders made payable to “Jersey City Division Of Health” will be accepted.

People For Animals is once again joining Pet Owners’ Day, which is in its fourth year, and will provide residents and their pets with spay/neuter counseling, $25 micro-chipping as well as Activyl and Revolution flea prevention applications ($15 for dogs, $12 for cats). They will also have Strongid (dewormer) home dosages at $5 per each 10 pounds of body weight. People for Animals only accepts cash or credit card.

Residents whose dogs are already up‐to-date with their rabies shots and have a three-year dog license can still come to these clinics for the free wellness shots and other services provided by People For Animals.

All dogs must be leashed or in a carrier; all cats must be in a carrier. Dogs and cats must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Pet Owners’ Day will be held on the following dates at the following locations from 10 am to 4 pm:

  • Sunday, April 28th: Pershing Field (Behind Skating Rink), 201 Central Ave.
  • Saturday, May 4th: Bethune Center Parking Lot, 140 MLK Dr.
  • Saturday, May 11th: Lincoln Park (Running Track Parking Lot)

This year’s events were funded by a 10,000 grant from Banfield Charitable Trust for the veterinarians, technicians and vaccinations at the clinics; as well as a $10,000 ASPCA grant. The ASPCA grant will go toward vaccinations at our clinics and also cover vaccinations of all dogs and cats in the city’s targeted free spay and neuter program as well.
