About the Jersey City Independent
What is the Jersey City Independent?
The Jersey City Independent provides quality journalism to a city that desperately needs it, covering hard news, community news, politics and culture, with the ultimate goal of a better-informed citizenry, more accountable government and increased civic participation.
We also publish a quarterly magazine, NEW, that tells the stories of Jersey City’s people, its arts community and its small business community.
The Independent is a member of the Online News Association and the New Jersey Press Association, and it was one of 20 projects selected for the 2010 Knight Digital Media Center News Entrepreneur Boot Camp. It is also very involved in a number of coalitions supporting independent local web-based news. Founder Jon Whiten sits on the advisory board of the New Jersey Hyperlocal News Association, and JCI is one of the founding sites behind Authentically Local, an organization devoted to promoting locally owned and operated hyperlocal news websites.
