Nobody in Chilltown rocked any harder or louder or with more artistic ambition in 2011 than the zany seven-piece experimental-artrock-pop ensemble known as Thomas Francis Takes His Chances.

Cram into Lucky 7′s Saturday for DJ Leonard Smalls’s Birthday Bash

By • Dec 2nd, 2011 • Category: Arts, Blog

Someone recently described Lucky 7′s colorfully claustrophobic confines as the worst possible place to try and fit a band but the most fun place to see a show in town, and we couldn’t agree more. DJ Leonard Smalls — aka Charles Stanton, the manager of Lucky 7 Tavern in Downtown Jersey City — throws his [...]

Parlay Studios in Harsimus Cove has played host to everything from the Jersey City Record Riot to craft fairs to the annual chili cook-off. Jeff Mangum’s two sold-out shows at the Loew’s Jersey theater in Journal Square on November 5 and 6 resembled a church service more than a rock concert.

Nestled on an industrial side street a few hundred yards from the stately Brennan Courthouse, Pearl Studios has long been a sanctuary for rock bands in need of a place to practice. Recently, it’s started renting out its largest studio — which has been outfitted with a stage, lighting, and concert sound equipment — so bands can put on their own shows.

Music, bowling, booze, and good vibes: that’s a recipe for a perfect Saturday night, and when it all helps raise money for two important neighborhood initiatives, it’s easy to see why such an eclectic and excited crowd turned out for the Art Strike benefit at Jersey City’s historic Barrow Mansion on Saturday.

By • Feb 22nd, 2011 • Category: Arts, Blog

Photos: James Damion They used to call themselves “The Hard Luck 5,” but Rye Coalition looked like five – make that six – of the luckiest guys to ever crawl out of basement and start a band as they reunited at a sold out show at Maxwell’s on Saturday, February 19. As lead singer Ralph [...]

Rye Coalition Gets the Band Back Together for a Father’s Birthday Wish

By • Feb 16th, 2011 • Category: Arts, Featured

Rye Coalition — Jersey City’s own bare-knuckled post-punk rock ‘n’ roll combo — will reunite for a show this weekend at Maxwell’s, but not for any of the usual reasons. None of the band’s albums are being reissued, there’s no special anniversary coming up, and no one’s looking for a big pay day to cash in on ‘90s nostalgia. Rye Coalition is getting back together for a birthday wish.
